GSA Staff Changes for Fall 2012
It is with mixed emotions that we announce that our current Boy's Academy Director, Coach Drew Prentice, is leaving after a year with GSA to pursue another opportunity.  We will miss Drew and appreciate all of his efforts on behalf of GSA.   We want to wish Drew and his family all the best for the future and thank him for his great service to GSA.  Drew brought the same organization and leadership to the Academy that has served him well as the head coach of the Collins Hill Boy's Varsity program.  Drew will always be part of the GSA family and we all wish him well in his future endeavors.
At the same time we are proud to announce that Sean Moynihan has accepted the position of Boy's Academy Director.  Sean has been a member of the GSA Academy staff for the last 5 seasons and has coached both his sons in the GSA recreation program starting at U5.  Prior to joining GSA, Sean was a full time staff coach for another soccer club in Atlanta, where in addition to coaching multiple age groups, he was also responsible for daily administrative and field duties.  Sean is a native of New Jersey where he coached and played at multiple levels.  From 1995-2000 Sean was the varsity boys coach for St. Rose High School in Belmar, New Jersey, his alma mater and where he was a member of the 1988 state championship team and also coached the team to  South Jersey state title in 2000.

A critical component to Sean’s experience is his 10 years as a coaching director for the Coerver Method, a method that focuses on individual skills and small group play.  Currently Sean possesses a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. While playing at NCAA Division I, Monmouth University, Sean was a 3 year starter, as well as, captain and MVP, and led the team to their first conference title in 1990.  The New Jersey Stallions of the USISL signed Sean to a professional player contract in 1996.  Sean spends his time off the pitch as a Tenant Advisor for and international commercial real estate firm, where he helps companies increase cash flow by developing real estate strategies that support their business plans.
We are also pleased to announce that Judson Hamby has accepted the position of Girl's Academy Director and will work closely with Campbell Chapman managing the Girl's Select Program.  Judson has coached at GSA since 2004 and has achieved success at all different age groups.  Judson also has served as the head coach of the Parkview High School Girl's Varsity Soccer team since 2007.  Under his leadership, the Parkview Panthers have won 3 consecutive station 5A championships and Judson was recognized as the Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Please join us in congratulating both Sean and Judson as they transition into their expanded roles at GSA.
ON THE PITCH with GSA Staff, Teams, and Athletes

Nuno Piteira, GSA's Boy's Director, is currently in Portugal and is coaching ODP select players along with our state DOC Jacob Daniel in this unique and special experience.  Nuno is back in his homeland where he grew up and shares the culture, both in soccer and every day life.

This trip to SCP academia is made up by 16 players including 5 from GSA.  GSA players include Jack Fitton (GSA99 Phoenix Red), Juan Pablo Torres (GSA 99 Phoenix Red), Andy Harris (GSA 97 Phoenix Red), John Robert Corzine (GSA 97 Phoenix Red) and Eli Pinner (GSA 95 Phoenix Red).

Thursday, March 29th, was the first full day of this trip that has Georgia ODP players living, eating, socializing and competing on the soccer pitch with SCP (Sporting Club of Portugal).  This is what makes this experience so different from any other the opportunity, to see what "full time" players, the best of the best must do daily to achieve their maximum potential as players and possibly one day a professional contract.

SCP has produced some of the top players in world, like Real Madrid Cristiano Ronaldo, Man United Nani, former world player of the year in Luis Figo and a "zillion" other top professionals, next to Barcelona no other club in world has had SCP success.

The GSA boys have decided to write a daily journal with details of their trip.  A different GSA player will post their update on the GSA Facebook page so please check back often for their updates.

GSA 97 Phoenix ECNL Leads U15 ECNL Rankings
It should be noted, these rankings are not predictive, but rather reactive to the results. In other words, the higher ranked team has accomplished something on the field to earn that position for now. As such, we expect quite a bit of turnover in the rankings throughout the rest of the ECNL season.

Burfor "Buff" Carr Joins Silverbacks

Borfor "Buff" Carr, a 24-year-old attacking midfielder who played for Central Gwinnett, has joined the Atlanta Silverbacks, the club announced Friday.  "It's amazing," Carr said. "I'm happy about being back here. In Romania I was just so far away from my friends and family.   I'll be even more happy with those people watching me."

The team was impressed with Carr's performance during preseason tryouts, according to a news release.   He played in all of the team's preseason games and scored a goal against Clayton State University.  "Borfor brings versatility and pace to the team, which are two great qualities to have," Silverbacks coach Alex Pineda Chacon said in the release.   "He can play different positions and has the ability to blow past defenders with his remarkable speed, so we're happy to add him into our squad after seeing him play very well this preseason."

After graduating from Central in 2006, Carr spent about a year working with Bruno Kalonji, whom he credits with a lot of his success.  "He was responsible for everything that happened to me," Carr said. "He was my mentor and trainer."  Carr is a native of Zqedru, Liberia, and left the country at age 3 for Ivory Coast. At age 14, he moved to Lawrenceville, where his family still lives.  Buff also coaches locally at Gwinnett Soccer Association (GSA).

In 2009, Carr started playing for Romanian club CS Concordia Chiajna. He spent two and a half years there before moving back to the metro Atlanta area last year.  arr may be available for Saturday's game against the Carolina RailHawks. It all depends on when the Romanian federation clears him to start playing for his new team.

The Silverbacks have an experienced attacking midfielder in Danilo Turcios. Carr said they played well together in preseason games.  "I like his style," Carr said. "He's one of the guys I've got to look up to. … They're all great guys who are easy to get along with."
